White-Label Reseller Hosting for Web Designers

By Graeme Preston, Founder & Owner · Published

If you build websites for clients, hosting them yourself can turn one-off projects into regular monthly income, and keep clients coming back to you rather than to a hosting company. White-label reseller hosting lets you do that under your own brand, without running your own servers.

What reseller hosting is

You buy a reseller plan from a host, and use it to create separate hosting accounts for your clients. Each client gets their own account, with their own login and limits. The host runs the servers; you decide what to charge and look after your clients.

What "white-label" should mean

"White-label" is used loosely. Before you buy, check what your clients will actually see:

  • The control panel: can you add your own logo and colours?
  • The login address: can clients log in at an address on your own domain, such as panel.yourcompany.co.uk, rather than the host's?
  • The login page: is it neutral, or does it carry the host's name?
  • Nameservers: do clients see the host's nameservers in their domain settings? Some hosts allow your own; many don't.
  • Emails and invoices: these normally come from your own billing system, not the host's.

What you'll be responsible for

  • Billing your clients. Many resellers use WHMCS, which can create, suspend and bill accounts automatically.
  • First-line support. Your clients will contact you. A good host supports you behind the scenes.
  • Setting your prices and deciding what each client plan includes.

Is it worth it?

A reseller plan for 10 client accounts typically costs less than charging two or three clients a modest monthly fee. The bigger benefit is often the relationship: clients who host with you are more likely to come back for changes, redesigns and new sites.

Things to check before choosing a reseller host

  • How many client accounts are included, and how much storage in total?
  • Are backups included for every client account?
  • Is email included, or sold separately? Some hosts leave email out so it can be provided by a dedicated email service.
  • Does it work with WHMCS or another billing system?
  • Who do you contact when something goes wrong, and how quickly do they respond?
